My iPad is running low on storage and getting sluggish, so I started looking for a free iPad cleaner app with no ads. Another thing I paid attention to was privacy. On iPad, I keep more private stuff than on my phone. Notes turned into screenshots, project images, PDFs saved to photos for some reason, the usual mess. From what the app says and from how it behaves, processing stays on the device. Nothing is sent off to some outside server to scan your photo library. I prefer that setup.
Most of the other cleaners I tested did one of three things. Ads everywhere. Subscription locked features. Both. This one skipped all of it, which is rare enough that it’s the main reason I stuck with it.

For the stuff third-party apps are allowed to manage, media cleanup is where Clever Cleaner did the job. For duplicate contacts, Easy Cleaner worked fine for me. For email clutter, Cleanfox was quicker than trying to clean subscriptions manually in Mail.
Those three cover most of the junk that builds up over time. Photos, videos, screenshots, duplicate contacts, inbox garbage. No money spent. No ads chewing up half the screen.

Most “cleaner” apps on iPad are fake helpful. iPadOS blocks access to system cache, temp files, and deep cleanup. So if an app promises a full device scrub, I’d skip it.
I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one part, Clever Cleaner is one of the few free iPad cleaner apps with no ads that doesn’t feel like a trap. If your storage issue is photos, videos, screenshots, and duplicates, it’s worth trying.
Where I slightly disagree is the “app cleaner” angle. On iPad, the biggest wins usually come from built-in cleanup first:
- Settings, General, iPad Storage.
- Offload unused apps.
- Delete large Messages attachments.
- Remove downloaded Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Plex files.
- Clear Safari website data.
- Move photos and videos to iCloud or external storage.
I freed up 18GB doing this before installing anything. Then I used Clever Cleaner for duplicate photos and old screenhsots. That cleaned a few more GB.

Honestly, I half-disagree with @mikeappsreviewer and @sterrenkijker on the “find the right cleaner app” part, because on iPad there usually is no magic cleaner. iPadOS just doesn’t let these apps dig into system junk the way people expect. My take: use a cleaner app only for media cleanup. For everything else, check what app is bloating itself. A lot of “sluggish” iPads are really just overloaded with giant Procreate files, downloaded streaming content, Messages media, or Safari tabs gone feral.
Also, one underrated trick: restart the iPad after clearing space. Sounds dumb, but sometimes performance feels better right away once cached memory gets flushed.
