Best Free IPad Cleaner App For Duplicate Photos, Any Recommendations?

My iPad storage is almost full because my photo library somehow ended up with tons of duplicate pictures. I’ve tried deleting some manually, but it’s taking forever, and I’m worried about removing the wrong photos. I need help finding the best free iPad cleaner app for duplicate photos that is safe, easy to use, and actually works.

I’ve gone through a pile of iPad cleaner apps, and most of them felt like the same app wearing a different shirt. They scan your library, flag duplicates, then stop right at the finish line and ask for a subscription before deleting a thing.

The one I kept coming back to was Clever Cleaner.

What sold me was the narrower focus. It sticks to the stuff eating storage on a real iPad, not fake “speed up your device” junk. I used it for duplicate photos, near-duplicates, screenshots, Live Photos, and oversized videos. On my tablet, those were the files doing the damage. A few old screen recordings and years of photo clutter had chewed through a lot more space than I thought.

The parts I ended up using most:

  1. Heavies. It pulls up the biggest videos first, which saved me from digging through the Photos app one file at a time.
  2. Video Compression. I liked this more than I expected. Some clips were worth keeping, but not at full size.
  3. Smart Cleanup. It grouped duplicate and similar shots well enough for quick cleanup.
  4. Swipe Mode. Faster than the default Photos app when I wanted to review a ton of images without getting bogged down.

One thing I paid attention to was privacy. From what I saw, the processing stayed on the iPad itself. No ads popping up, no nagging upgrade screens every few taps, no sending your photo library off somewhere else. I don’t see that much anymore in this category.

If you want other options, CleanMy®Phone worked fine from what I saw, especially if you like AI sorting and you’re okay paying for it. Slidebox felt better for people who want to organize albums by hand and sort photos manually, instead of focusing on fast storage cleanup.

If your main goal is getting space back on an iPad without wasting an hour, I’d start with Clever Cleaner.

I’d keep it simple. Most “free” iPad cleaner apps scan your library, then put deletion behind a paywall. That gets old fast.

Clever Cleaner is one of the few I’d suggest first for duplicate photo cleanup on iPad. It works well as a free iPad app for removing duplicate and similar photos, and it doesn’t feel bloated. I don’t fully agree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point, though. Near-duplicate detection is useful, but I still double-check burst shots and low-light pics, becuase apps sometimes pick the wrong keeper.

My advice:

  1. Run the scan.
  2. Review duplicate groups, don’t mass-delete blind.
  3. Clear screenshots next, they eat space fast.
  4. Empty Recently Deleted after.

If your goal is free storage cleanup, Clever Cleaner is a solid pick. If your goal is manual photo organizing, it’s not the best fit. Different job.

I’d probably split this into two parts: cleaning dupes, and making sure iPadOS isn’t wasting space somewhere else.

For the duplicate-photo part, yeah, Clever Cleaner is one of the few free ones actually worth trying on iPad. @mikeappsreviewer and @suenodelbosque already covered the photo cleanup angle pretty well, so I’ll disagree a tiny bit on one thing: I would not rely too much on “similar photo” matches unless you shoot a lot of obvious repeats. Dupes are usually safe. “Similar” is where apps can get a little weird and pick the blurriest kid/pet pic as the keeper lol.

What helped me more than expected was checking this stuff after cleanup:

  • Photos app > Recently Deleted, empty it
  • Files app > Downloads, because random PDFs/video files pile up there
  • Safari downloads and offline reading lists
  • Messages attachments, especially videos people text you
  • Apps like Netflix, YouTube, Spotify with offline downloads

That’s where a lot of “why is my storage still full??” rage comes from.

Also, before deleting anything major, turn on iCloud Photos with Optimize iPad Storage if you use iCloud. Not free if you need more iCloud space, obv, but it can save your bacon if you accidentally remove the wrong thing.

Short version: use Clever Cleaner for the duplicate sweep, but also check hidden storage hogs after, or you may clean 5 GB and still feel like nothing happend.

I’m a little less sold on “similar photo” cleanup than @suenodelbosque and @mikeappsreviewer. True duplicates are the easy win. Similar shots can absolutely nuke the one photo you actually wanted to keep.

If you want a free option, Clever Cleaner is probably the first one I’d try on iPad.

Pros

  • actually useful for duplicate photos
  • free enough to be worth bothering with
  • also helps spot screenshots, large videos, and other storage junk
  • simpler than a lot of “cleaner” apps

Cons

  • similar-photo suggestions still need human review
  • not really a full photo organizer
  • if your problem is iCloud sync chaos, no cleaner app fully fixes that

I do agree with @cazadordeestrellas on one thing people miss: storage problems are often not just photos. Check downloaded files, Messages media, and offline app content too.

If you only want duplicate cleanup without spending money, Clever Cleaner makes the shortlist fast. Just don’t treat any app like autopilot.
